Some Things about the Football Heels…

Year two is about to start for the Larry Fedora era. Hopefully that era might one day be labeled as a dynasty, but for now let’s keep our feet on the ground in that department. There are lots of changes from last year’s squad to this season’s, but that does not mean that there is no talent in Chapel Hill, on the contrary. From what the media voted there is enough to go around for the Tar Heels as they boast four All-ACC Pre-Season players (the complete list is below), with two of them being on the offensive side and two others on the defensive side of the ball.

In a pre-season team that is for the most part made up of seniors, Carolina has one of the only six non fourth year players to make it, in junior tight Eric Ebron, who might just be the recipient of many passes come this fall in Chapel Hill. The other one to make it from coach Fedora’s squad is James Hurst, a senior lineman, who hopefully follows in the path set by his former team mates now playing at the next level this season. On the other side of the ball we are still looking at a lineman, this time defensive end Kareem Martin, who is in his last season at UNC, as well as senior safety Tre Boston. Both should make a name for themselves as they step up into the leaders role for this part of the squad.

North Carolina had the second most players on this pre-season ballot, with only Florida State having more (six in all). You can meet these four players, as well as the rest of the squad at Kenan Stadium, when the team will have its annual “Meet the Heels” on August 3rd, the gates opening at 3:00 p.m. EST for the fans.

From the official web site of UNC Athletics it says that the players will be available for autographs from 4 to 6 p.m. With the defensive player going the first hour and the offensive ones the second. Second year head coach Larry Fedora will be available the entire time. Free Carolina football trading cards, schedule cards and posters will be available, Concession stands and rest rooms will be open on the North and South side, while parking will cost five dollars per car.

For those of you that can go this is a pretty cool way to get to see the new version of the football squad and be part of the football season even without going to any of the games. Especially considering this is the first year with many new teams in the ACC. If the weather was to be a problem on the set date make sure to check on goheels.com for more information.

And while you are there you are going to see the squad with their new uniforms for the 2013 season. Gone is the dark blue and introduced is the black shirt. Being the “old man on the porch” I will say that I am a fan of old things, and while I know that we can not be wearing short shorts in basketball, I still like to think that white and carolina blue are just fine as colors for the team.

But no matter what color the Heels are wearing you know I will be rooting for them!
